I’ve been driving a BYD Han EV for the past two years, and the latest smart driving update (OTA v2.1.3) dropped last month. Naturally, I had to test it right away. After a week of mixed highway commutes and chaotic city streets, here’s my unfiltered take. If you’re wondering whether to update — or what to expect — this should help.
Why This Update Matters
BYD’s DiPilot system used to feel like a beta product. Lane keep was jerky, adaptive cruise control hesitated, and automatic lane changes were basically a party trick. But this update claims to fix those pain points. I was skeptical, but after driving over 500 km, I can say it’s a genuine improvement — not just a placebo.
Most Chinese automakers are catching up to Tesla’s Autopilot, but BYD took a different route. They’re not chasing full self-driving yet. Instead, they focused on making highway driving less tiring. And honestly? That’s what I needed.
What Actually Changed in the Latest OTA
The update size was about 1.2 GB — downloaded via 4G while parked. After installation (took roughly 20 minutes), the first thing I noticed was the new menu layout: now you can see real-time sensor status and confidence level for each driving function. That transparency is rare.
Here are the biggest changes I identified:
- Lane centering algorithm revised — smoother curves, less ping-pong effect.
- Adaptive cruise control response — less aggressive braking when cut off.
- Automatic lane change — now works above 60 km/h (was 80 km/h).
- Traffic light recognition — finally! But it only displays, not controls.
- Parking assist — slightly faster detection of parking spots.
But not everything is gold. The traffic light feature is more of a gimmick — it shows the light color on the dashboard but doesn’t interact with cruise control. Disappointing.
Highway Test: Smooth but Not Selfish
I took the G4 expressway from Shenzhen to Guangzhou — about 120 km under heavy traffic. I engaged the system right after the toll gate. For the first 10 minutes, I was tense, waiting for it to screw up. It didn’t.
The car held its lane beautifully, even on the gentle curves near Humen Bridge. What impressed me was the gap acceptance when a truck merged in front: the deceleration was gradual, not a panic stop. That alone is a huge step up from the previous version.
However, on sharp curves (like those on the S3 branch), the system still slows down to 80 km/h even though I’d comfortably take it at 100. It feels overly cautious. And if the lane markings are faded (common in rural stretches), it disengages without warning — leaving you to grab the wheel. That’s dangerous.
City Street Challenges: Where It Stumbles
City driving is the real test. I drove through Shenzhen’s Huaqiangbei area — pedestrians, scooters, random jaywalkers. The system’s forward collision warning is now more sensitive, which is good and bad. Good: it caught a cyclist cutting in front of me. Bad: it triggered a false alarm when crossing a bridge shadow.
The adaptive cruise in stop-and-go traffic was surprisingly smooth — no jerky starts like before. But lane keep in intersections is still a problem. If the lane splits or merges, the car sometimes follows the wrong line. I had to disengage twice to avoid going into a turn lane.
Another thing: the update didn’t improve traffic jam assist much. It still requires you to touch the steering wheel every 15 seconds (capacitive detection), which is okay, but the nag is annoying when the car is basically parked.

Common Issues & How to Work Around Them
No update is perfect. Here are three gripes I encountered and how to deal with them:
1. Phantom braking on overpasses. The system sometimes mistakes bridge joints for obstacles. My fix: whenever I approach an overpass, I lightly press the accelerator — this overrides the braking without fully disengaging cruise control.
2. Lane departure during lane splits. If you’re in a lane that splits into two, the car may pick the wrong branch. I now manually disengage the lane keep when I see a merge or split coming. It’s not ideal, but it’s safer.
3. Traffic jam assist nagging. To avoid the 15-second steering wheel reminder, I keep one hand on the bottom of the wheel. The capacitive sensors there seem more responsive. Also, try turning the music down — the beep is loud!
One more pro tip: after the update, recalibrate your front camera. The system will prompt you, but many skip it. Do it — it improves lane detection accuracy by about 30% in my experience.
